Journalism Writing and Editing Course Offered at UMaine Hutchinson Center

Belfast, Maine - The UMaine Hutchinson Center is offering CMJ 236, Journalism Writing and Editing, for the Spring Semester. The course will be offered on Wednesdays from 9:00 to 11:30 am beginning on January 16 and running until May 3. This is a 3-credit University of Maine live class taught in Belfast.

With the emphasis on intensive, Journalism Writing and Editing aims to develop in students writing and reporting skills that will serve their ambitions in several forms of mass media: print, broadcast, web, advertising and public relations. The goal of the course is to have students publishing their work and accumulating clips that demonstrate their abilities as they seek employment.

The course requires enterprise as students will focus on an individual beat that will afford them opportunities to practice the skills they develop in class. The fundamentals of writing/grammar, spelling, how to put a story
together are emphasized is knowledge of and adherence to Associated Press style. These will provide students a standard to measure their work by. A B or better and passing a writing exam are required to continue taking courses in the journalism major.

Greg McManus, an editor at the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel, will teach this springs offering. Greg has more than 20 years experience in magazines and newspapers and has logged more than 20 years teaching writing at the University of Maine, including eight with the journalism department. Many of his students have gone on to pursue successful careers in journalism and other areas.
