Rockland, Maine - On Thursday December 13 at 6:30 PM in the Friends Community Room, the group A Turning Night of Stars returns to the Rockland Library to perform the spoken poetry of the 13th century Sufi mystic Jelaluddin Rumi with musical accompaniment. A Turning Night of Stars is a group of Maine residents who first began performing Rumi’s poetry in 1994 and have performed since then at locations throughout the state including the Maine Festival, The Maine Common Ground Country Fair, the Live Poets Society and others. Relying on a mixture of
arrangements and improvisation, the performers use traditional tunes from many cultures to accompany the lively and unpredictable poetry of Rumi. Much of the group’s original inspiration came from the performances and versions of Rumi by Robert Bly and Coleman Barks.
A Turning Night of Stars consists of Lock Kiermaier on spoken vocals, Tom Jamrog on mandolin and accordion, Hank Lunn on dumbeck, Dave Kirkham on stand-up bass and Jack Silverio on guitar. The group’s Rockland Library performances are lively and well attended.
