Governor & First Lady to Host Second Annual Blaine House Food Drive

Augusta, Maine - Governor Paul R. LePage and First Lady Ann M. LePage will be on-hand to greet generous Mainers this Saturday at the second of three food drives the First Family is hosting this fall at the Blaine House.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 3. The third and final drive will be held next Saturday, Nov. 10.

After dropping off their donations, Mainers are invited to tour the residence, enjoy light refreshments and meet the Governor and First Lady.

The First Family started their annual food drive tradition in 2011 and collected thousands of pounds of food, which was divided equally and distributed to the Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth, Sister Mary O’Donnell Shelter in Presque Isle and the York County Shelters Program in Alfred. This year, they will donate all of the food directly to the Auburn-based Good Shepherd Food Bank, which will then determine which communities will benefit the most from the contributions.

“The holidays are quickly approaching with the winter months, and it is important that we reach out to those in our communities who have hit a rough path in their lives,” said Governor LePage. “In these tough financial times, many families are struggling to make ends meet. I have been in their shoes before. The First Lady and I are happy to open the Blaine House and do what we can to help those Mainers who are in need,” continued the Governor.

“Good Shepherd Food Bank is very thankful to have the support of the Governor and his family, along with all the community members who will make donations during the Blaine House food drives,” said Kristen Miale, president of the Food Bank. “As we prepare for the long winter ahead, the Food Bank is working to make sure we’re able to provide an ongoing supply of high quality food items to our 600 hunger relief partners across Maine. These food drives will certainly help us reach that goal.”
