Black Bears win 13th game to wrap up regular season
DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine Black Bears claimed the fifth regular season championship in program history on Sunday afternoon, as they defeated New Hampshire by a 4-2 final score in the regular season finale to clinch the title for the second straight season.
Maine has won at least a share of the regular season title in 2005, 2015, 2017, 2020, and
now 2021.The Black Bears came out with an edge, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes to stake out an early advantage. Chloe Walton extended the lead to three early in the third quarter before UNH responded with two quick goals to tighten things up, and the 3-2 score held deep into the fourth. Finally, Hana Davis scored in the final minute on a rebound to seal the 4-2 Maine win.
With the wrap of the regular season, the field for the upcoming America East tournament is set. The seeding in order will be Maine, Monmouth, UAlbany, California, New Hampshire, and Stanford, with Maine and Monmouth earning first round byes. The other four teams will square off Thursday in Orono as the first stage of the weekend, followed by Maine taking on the winner of UNH and California Friday at noon in the Semifinals.
