WENHAM, Mass. - Freshman Kara Kelly (York, Maine) ended a scoreless tie four minutes into a second overtime period to lift Saint Joseph’s College (9-4, 4-1 GNAC) past Gordon College (5-9, 3-4 CCC), 1-0, on Monday afternoon.
THE LEAD
Early in the second extra frame, freshman forward Michalia Parent (Westborough, Mass.) used her speed to get loose behind the Gordon defense and skipped a pass over a defender’s stick to Kelly, who curled a shot around Fighting Scots keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) to effectively end the game at the 88:57 mark.
NOTABLE
• Junior forward Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) totaled seven shots, all on goal, in the victory
• Today’s win marks the Monks’ first double-overtime triumph since the Royal Blue required a pair of extra frames to down Rivier University, 4-3, on September 23rd, 2012
THE KEEPERS
SJC freshman Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) posted five saves to record the fourth shutout of her collegiate career.
Hicks kept her team in the game until the end, stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced in the hard-fought loss.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
Today’s victory over Gordon College is the Monks’ first-ever versus the Fighting Scots – a team St. Joe’s had not played since 2003 prior to this afternoon. Saint Joseph’s is now 1-5 all-time against Gordon, which is the first team the SJC field hockey program ever faced in and NCAA varsity contest – a 2-0 setback at home on September 16th, 1995.
NEXT!
Saint Joseph’s is off until next Saturday when the Monks travel to face conference-rival Lasell College (6-7, 3-1 GNAC) in a 12:00 PM start.
Gordon hosts Western New England on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
