Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Mets (41-39) received six strong innings from Michael Fulmer (3-1) and hit two homers, beating the Portland Sea Dogs (29-53), 5-2, Saturday night in front of 4,858 fans on July 4th at NYSEG Stadium.
Fulmer beat Portland and Cuevas for the second time this season, working six innings on four hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and eight strikeouts. Binghamton's bullpen worked three scoreless. Jon Velasquez pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save of the season.
Portland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Manuel Margot singled with two outs, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a strange play. Aneury Tavarez struck out for what looked like the third out, but catcher Xorge Carillo threw it away, allowing Margot to score.
Binghamton responded with a two-out hit in their second inning, as Gavin Cecchini launched a grand slam to left field, giving the B-Mets the lead for good. All four runs were unearned due to a fielding error by 3B Jantzen Witte.
Cuevas took his fifth loss of the season, giving up four hits and four unearned runs over 5 IP.
Witte came through in the third inning, nailed a two-out RBI double, cutting Binghamton's lead to 4-2. Aderlin Rodriguez added the final run, a solo-shot off Mike McCarthy in the seventh.
