McCarthy On Point as 'Dogs Shutout the 'Cats

Sea Dogs End Seven-Game Losing Streak with 2-0 Win
Manchester, NH - Mike McCarthy, Williams Jerez, and Jorge Marban combined to allow just three hits as the Sea Dogs (33-62) ended their seven-game losing streak to beat the Fisher Cats (48-43) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Mike McCarthy (W, 5-4) didn't allow a baserunner until the sixth inning, retiring the first 16 batters he faced before a one-out walk to Shane Opitz in the sixth.  Jorge Flores followed up with a single for the first Fisher Cats hit of the game and Williams Jerez entered the game in relief for Portland.  Jerez induced a ground ball up the middle from Roemon Fields and Oscar Tejeda started a 6-3 double play to end the Fisher Cats threat.

The Sea Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single by Keury De La Cruz, scoring Reed Gragnani.  Portland made it 2-0 in the seventh on an RBI double by David Chester, who finished 3-for-4 and recorded his first three-hit game of the season.  John Anderson (L, 5-4) suffered his first loss since June 7th.  Anderson allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out two.

Jorge Marban (S, 4) closed things out, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing no hits while issuing a walk.  The three hits allowed by Portland pitching ties a season low (May 27th at Binghamton) and is the team's third shutout win of the year.  The win for Portland is their first since July 9th at Reading as their seven game losing streak comes to an end.  They also ended New Hampshire's season-high five-game win streak.

The Sea Dogs open up a seven-game homestand tomorrow night at Hadlock Field against the Trenton Thunder, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.  William Cuevas (8-5, 3.40) makes the start for Portland while Brady Lail (5-3, 2.21) gets the ball for the Thunder.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased by phone at 207-879-9500 or online at seadogs.com.
