Portland, Maine - A chilly night at Hadlock Field couldn't cool off the Sea Dogs' bats, as Portland took game two of their four game series over the Trenton Thunder by a final score of 10-3.
Six days after Mike McCarthy (W, 2-1) picked up the win in a 10-1 Sea Dogs victory at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, he threw his best outing of the season, going six scoreless innings and allowing just four hits while walking one and striking out two. McCarthy has now won two straight games, thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings, and joins Mike Augliera as one of two Sea Dogs to throw quality starts this season.
A night after they were shut out, the Portland offense faced a tough test as they had to face Yankees' top prospect Luis Severino (L, 1-1), but they were able to put up six runs (three earned) on eight hits in five-plus innings. The Sea Dogs got on the board in the 2nd, when Blake Tekotte (2-for-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, BB, 2 R) drilled a triple over the head of center fielder Jake Cave. Jonathan Roof (1-for-3, RBI, BB, R) followed up with an RBI single to give Portland the early 1-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs added another run in the 4th on an RBI double by Tekotte, scoring Tim Roberson. Every player in the Portland lineup reached base in the contest, while eight of nine starters posted at least one hit. Portland batted around in the 6th, scoring six runs on four hits and sending 10 men to the plate. The Sea Dogs also took advantage of defensive miscues by Trenton, scoring seven unearned runs in the game on five Trenton errors - a new season high for the Thunder, who came into the game having committed just nine errors in their first 14 games.
The series continues tomorrow afternoon, first pitch at Hadlock Field comes at 1:00 PM. William Cuevas (1-1, 6.75) will make his third start of the year for Portland, while Miguel Sulbaran (1-0, 2.57) takes the mound for Trenton.
