Skowhegan, Maine - Skowhegan is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a nationally-designated Main Street community by hosting a gala and auction planned for Saturday, May 30th at Lakewood Inn Restaurant.
Spearheading the event is Main Street Skowhegan Board Member Brandi Meisner. “When I joined the board, my goal was to get more young people involved in our community and promote the wonderful ways Main Street contributes to our community. The gala will be a fun way to do just that.”
There will be four appetizer courses, silent and live auctions, live music, and dancing at this black tie event. Lakewood Theater’s Jeff Quinn will be the emcee.
Meisner, who is an insurance producer with Higgins & Bolduc Agency in Oakland, says she is structuring the evening in a way to encourage interaction among attendees. “We’ve got a huge community of people raising families who will appreciate a chance to get out, get dressed up, and have fun,” she said.
Meisner chose to collect experiences, rather than physical gifts, for the auction because “they get people involved in a community, get people moving, and introduce new or different things to do in the area,” said Meisner.
Maine experiences up for auction will include a seaplane ride for two around Wesserunsett Lake, guided fishing on Togus, Webber, or North East ponds, and a private tour and happy hour for six of Norman Dickey’s Vintage Sock Hop Museum, complete with antique cars, a life size Betty Boop, and other period collectibles from the diner and drive-in era. Auction items will be listed on the Main Street Skowhegan web site.
Main Street Skowhegan’s gala will also highlight many of the non-profit organization’s accomplishments in their first ten years, as well as planned future programs to achieve a shared vision of a downtown that is vibrant, beautiful, and economically sound.
“People are always telling me how far along they see Skowhegan has come in its revitalization. Whether we’re talking about the improved infrastructure downtown, rehabilitated storefronts, or improved community-building events, we give a lot of credit to former Main Street directors, board members, and volunteers,” said Main Street Director Dugan Murphy.
A few downtown business owners and volunteers will be sharing stories throughout the evening of how Main Street programs has positively impacted their lives and their businesses.
The Main Street 10th Anniversary Gala and Auction is sponsored by Backyard Farms, Redington-Fairview General Hospital, Somerset Power Engineering, @Work Personnel Services, and Short Circuit Electrical Services. The appetizer courses are sponsored by the Old Mill Pub, The Children’s Cottage, Skowhegan Wooden Rule Company, and Ass Over Teakettle Bloody Mary Mix.
Tickets are $40 per person or $70 per couple and are available at The Bankery and Russakoff Jewelers. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Because seating is limited, patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early. Follow Main Street Skowhegan on Facebook and visit their web page for auction item descriptions and other details.
