Camden International Film Festival and Camden Opera House announce May CIFF Selects: I AM BIG BIRD

Family Night at the movies!
Camden, Maine - CIFF Selects announces the May screening of I AM BIG BIRD at the Camden Opera House on Wednesday, May 20,  at 7 p.m. This family-friendly, heartwarming documentary was dubbed by Moviefone as “simply gleeful viewing!” The film chronicles the life of Carroll Spinney, the man who has been Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969.

“I AM BIG BIRD is a great family movie that will appeal to all ages. We look forward to bringing this story of everyone’s favorite Sesame Street character to the Camden Opera House in May,” said CIFF’s Founder/Executive Director Ben Fowlie.

“This series is just growing and growing with each film - and each has been enlightening,
heartwarming, educational and brought us together as a community

in special ways. I am especially looking forward to the story of the man - and the heart - of the person inside of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch” added Opera Houes Manager Kerry Hadley.

Generations of children have cherished Spinney’s characters during the past four decades. At 81 years of age, the tenacious and enthusiastic performer has no intention of slowing down. I AM BIG BIRD features incredible footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces Spinney’s journey from bullied child to celebrated performer. This loving portrait peels away the instances that inspired his creation of Big Bird, and as the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.

Camden International Film Festival and the Camden Opera House, in partnership with SundanceNow Doc Club, are bringing CIFF Selects documentaries to Camden one Wednesday each month through August. The monthly CIFF Selects series will include titles from the SundanceNow Doc Club, an online platform for the world’s best documentarians, including many CIFF alumni--giving CIFF’s audience the chance to watch great films year-round.

Additional CIFF Selects titles will be announced soon. The screenings are held one Wednesday each month. Upcoming screenings will be held May 20, June 17, July 15 and August 19. Q&As with filmmakers, either in person or via skype, will follow select screenings. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased on the day of show at the Camden Opera House box office.
