Lewiston, Maine — Two goals apiece from Brendan Shinnimin and Tobias Rieder helped the Pirates stave off the Worcester Sharks 6-4 Thursday night. Brett Hextall and Andy Miele also scored for the Pirates while Mark Visentin made 35 saves to earn the win.
The Pirates struck first at 5:13 in the first when Hextall scored his ninth goal of the year. Jordan Martinook broke into the Sharks zone and left a drop pass for Hextall who promptly wound up and beat Troy Grosenick from the top of the right circle. The Sharks answered back at 8:05 when Travis Oleksuk knocked in a pass from the front. Then, Brendan Shinnimin regained the lead at 11:26 when he knocked home a rebound. Rostislav Klesla flipped a puck on net where Yip made contact with it before Shinnimin banged home the loose puck.
In the second, Rieder made it 3-1 with a nice power play goal, ripping a shot from just below the hashmarks after a nice feed from Yip. The Sharks cut the lead to one at 15:18 on a shorthanded goal from Konrad Abeltshauser, but Miele notched a power play goal just nine seconds later to recapture the two goal lead. Miele’s goal is the 56th of his career, tying him for 14th in team history with Derek Whitmore. It also gives him 55 points on the year, a new career high. At 17:14, Shinnimin scored his second of the night, burying a shot from the slot to make it 5-2 at the end of the second period.
In the third, the Sharks began to chip away at the Pirate lead, scoring first at 1:04 when James Livingston deflected a shot past Visentin. Then, at 4:29, Rob Davison cut the lead to one when he beat Visentin with a slap shot from the top of the left circle. Worcester kept up the pressure, throwing the puck towards the Portland net but with no luck. Finally, at 19:31, Rieder scored his second of the night with Grosenick pulled, solidifying the win, the first for the Pirates since Feb. 16 against Adirondack.
