Camden/Rockport, Maine - Ecologist Matt Arsenault will lead a presentation about the sedges of Maine at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, March 4 at 12:00 noon.
Though a dominant group of plants across Maine, sedges are an often overlooked and underappreciated component of many local ecosystems. Arsenault will introduce the audience to the world of sedges, and by touching upon their key morphological characteristics, their roles in ecosystems, and their statewide distribution and habitats. He will highlight a number of rare, threatened, and endangered sedge species.
Matt will also talk about the completion of the recent field guide, “The Sedges of Maine” and some of the work and research that went into the five-year project of documenting over 220 sedge species in the state.
Arsenault is an ecologist at Stantec Consulting in Topsham, Maine. For over 10 years, he has conducted botanical and ecological surveys and studies throughout eastern North America. Matt graduated from the University of Maine in 2003 with a B.S. degree in Botany.
