Pirates Continue VIP Series against Monarchs

Pirates (16-18-2-7, 41 points) vs. Monarchs (29-13-2-5, 65 points), 1:00 PM EST
Manchester leads VIP Cup Series 4-2
Lewiston, Maine - The Pirates will look to rebound from last night’s loss when they host the Manchester Monarchs.  Puck drops at 1 p.m. for the seventh meeting in the VIP Cup series, presented by VIP Tires & Service.  Manchester leads the series 4-2.

The Pirates fell 7-1 to the Binghamton Senators last night.  Brandon Yip was the lone goal scorer for Portland, in a game that saw both teams combine for 224 penalty minutes, including 148 in the third period.  The Pirates are winless at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee since December 31st when they defeated Bridgeport.

The Monarchs lost to the St. John’s IceCaps 3-1 Saturday night.  Jean-Francois Berube made 18 saves on 21 shots and Linden Vey tallied the only goal for the Monarchs in the third period.  The Monarchs are first in the Eastern Conference with 65 points, four ahead of the Springfield Falcons.

The Pirates and Monarchs last battled on January 25 with the Monarchs winning 3-2 in overtime.  Linden Vey scored with just 1.8 seconds left in the overtime frame to give the Monarchs the win.  Andy Miele and Ethan Werek scored for the Pirates and Louis Domingue made 36 saves in the defeat, which dropped the Pirates to 2-2-1-1 in the VIP Cup Series this year.

KeyBank Key to the Game

Exhale: Frustrations boiled over last night for the Pirates, as they set a franchise record with 134 penalty minutes. The Pirates need to put last night’s game behind them, and get back to the basics of hockey in order to snap their recent slide. Look for the team to concentrate on playing a complete game, especially on the defensive end.

This afternoon’s game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking “Listen Live” and can be seen live on AHL Live at ahllive.com. The pregame show starts at 12:40 with Jeff Mannix. Tickets are available at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee by calling 783-2009 ext. 525 or online at thecolisee.com.
