Dachshunds on Parade: 10th Annual Maine Wienerfest
Marking its tenth anniversary this year, Maine Wienerfest celebrates all things dachshund on the waterfront in Belfast on Sunday, September 8. Belfast’s quirkiest event of the season opens its gates at 11am to greet an anticipated 300-400 of these endearing little dogs with big hearts.
“Everyone—not only the dachshunds and their owners—will get a kick out of this tenth-anniversary celebration,” offers Dale Kuhnert of Friends of Belfast Parks, which produces Wienerfest as a fundraiser for maintenance and improvement of the Belfast Dog Park. “You’ll definitely see things here you’ve never seen before, and the sight of all these wonderful little dogs doing their thing is bound to leave you smiling.”
2013 Wienerfest Schedule
11am: Gates open. Enjoy food, craft and service vendors, meet the dogs, and take in the amazing view of Belfast Harbor. Dogs can enjoy “bobbing for wieners.”
12 Noon: Grand Parade of Dachshunds. Scores of the little dogs march around the park led by Grand Marshal Diane Mendes-Wood, the founder of Wienerfest ten years ago.
12:45pm: Wienerfest Costume Contest. A panel of judges pick the most clever doxie get-ups from a field of more than fifty. Past costumes have included homemade and store-bought bumblebees, dragonflies, hotdogs, lobsters, skunks and even an aviator in a biplane! Last year’s winner was a dachshund from Bangor rigged out as a box of Kleenex.
1:30pm: The Doxie Derby. A series of hilarious races run for more than a hour, culminating in an exciting championship round. Watch as everyone coaxes their dog to run in a straight line.
Admission to Wienerfest is $2 for adults, and free for dogs and children under 10. The event takes place at Steamboat Landing Park (at Front and Commercial Streets). For more information call 338-2160 or visit www.friendsofbelfastparks.org for photos of previous year’s festivals!
