Portland, Maine - Bangor Savings Bank will host a reception for families at the Portland Public Library on October 4th from 4 – 8 p.m. during First Friday Art Walk, offering refreshments and complimentary copies of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak for the first 1,000 children. The event takes place in the library’s Lewis Gallery, where the exhibit Maurice Sendak: 50 Works, Years, Reasons is on display. Bangor Savings Bank is a primary sponsor of the retrospective of the renowned children author’s work.

“Bangor Savings Bank is thrilled to be a part of this special exhibit about Maurice Sendak. His books have been read and loved by children and parents for decades,” said Yellow Breen, Executive Vice President at Bangor Savings Bank. “To support kids and reading, we’re happy to provide an opportunity for those families who may not have a copy of Sendak’s iconic book, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to pick up a complimentary copy to add to their library at home.”

The exhibition includes 50 original works from Where the Wild Things Are in a variety of mediums including sketches, illustrations, and works on paper, and showcases highlights from Sendak’s career and the diverse art forms in which he was renowned. Many of the works are from private collections and friends of the artist, offering a survey of his range as an artist and author.

From children’s literature, animated films, and textbooks to Broadway and opera, Sendak garnered worldwide acclaim for his genius and insight. Among the contributing commentators to the exhibition are playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, comedian Stephan Colbert, artist Robert Crumb, director Spike Jonze, President Barack Obama, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, actor/director Tom Hanks, and author Lemony Snicket.
