Blue Hill, Maine - Artist Judith Taylor will give a lecture on Thursday, December 6th at 7:00 PM at the Blue Hill Public Library. Ms. Taylor painted the labor mural The History of Maine that was made famous when it was ordered removed from the Maine Department of Labor by Governor Paul LePage in March 2011. Approximately a year later a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit that sought to have the mural reinstated. The case remains under appeal. Full-sized reproductions of the panels are currently on display at the Library through December 14th.
Taylor will discuss the national controversy over the mural’s removal and the ways in which art and visual culture shape how American labor history is represented and remembered. She will be introduced by Brooksville artist, Rob Shetterly, who has been a plaintiff in the case to restore the paintings.
The lecture is sponsored by the Library and open to everyone. For more information contact the Library at 374-5515.
