Portland, Maine - Cornelius Randolph hit a two-run homer off Matthew Gorst in the top of the 10th and the Reading Fightin Phils (2-0) overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the Sea Dogs (0-2) 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
The homer by Randolph led off the 10th (with an automatic baserunner on second) and was his first hit of the season. Gorst (L, 0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in an inning of relief.
The Sea Dogs mounted a rally in the bottom of the 10th, plating a run on a wild pitch by Kyle Dohy (W, 1-0). Dohy would go on to fan back-to-back batters before retiring Brett Netzer on a groundout to end the game.
The Sea Dogs led 4-1 entering the eighth inning. Mickey Moniak doubled off Jordan Weems to drive in Josh Stephen and cut the deficit to 4-2. After Weems walked two more batters to load the bases, Andrew Schwaab came in and hit Luke Williams to make it a 4-3 game. Schwaab struck out Arquimedes Gamboa to end the Fightins threat in the inning.
Reading tied it in the ninth off of Durbin Feltman (BS, 1), who was making his Double-A debut. Feltman walked Austin Bossart to begin the inning, then allowed a single to Stephen. After striking out Adam Haseley and walking Moniak, Austin Listi hit a sac fly to tie the game 4-4.
The Fightins took an early lead on a solo homer by Moniak off of Denyi Reyes (L, 0-1) in the top of the first. Reyes would not allow a hit after the first inning.
Portland tied the game in the fourth. After a leadoff double by Luke Tendler, three batters later Jhon Nunez hit an RBI infield single to even the score 1-1. Joseph Monge then reached on an error by third baseman Austin Listi to put runners on first and second. Next, Jeremy Rivera hit a sharp liner to deep left that bounced off the glove of Cornelius Randolph, allowing both baserunners to score on the second error of the inning and give the Sea Dogs a 3-1 lead.
Portland padded its lead on a two-out RBI single from Bobby Dalbec in the top of the seventh off of Aaron Brown.
Making his Double-A debut, Denyi Reyes allowed one run on just two hits in six innings. The righty walked one and fanned four.
Reading starter Adonis Medina was also making his Double-A debut and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked none.
