#3 Southern Maine Blanks Saint Joseph’s, 4-0

STANDISH, Maine - #3 University of Southern Maine (17-4) blanked Saint Joseph’s College (20-8), 4-0, in a non-conference baseball contest at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Thursday afternoon.

Southern Maine pitchers James Sinclair (Portland, Maine), Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) and Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine) combined to toss a one-hitter while fanning 10 SJC batters in the shutout triumph. Sinclair did not allow a base hit until sophomore Kevin Aylward (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The Monks were limited to just three baserunners in the game overall.

All four of the Huskies’ runs came by way of the long ball as junior left fielder Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) and junior third baseman Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) belted solo shots in the top of the fourth and junior designated hitter Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) deposited a two-run jack over the left field wall in the top of the eighth.

Saint Joseph’s freshman starter Johnathan Flynn (Holden, Mass.) falls to 3-1 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits over four innings. Freshman Matt Poff (Pelham, N.H.) allowed two runs off four hits with four K’s in four frames of relief and sophomore Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) fanned one and walked one in an inning of work.

Sinclair improves to 3-0 on the year after allowing a hit and a walk while fanning six over 6.2 innings while Curran tossed 1.1 perfect innings with two K’s and Dexter struck out a pair in the ninth.

Saint Joseph’s will host Norwich University in a conference twinbill on Saturday. The opener is slated to start at 1:00 PM.
