Camden Mariners Varsity Sailing Team Win Maine State Championship

Castine, Maine - Camden Mariners Varsity Sailing Team won the Maine State Championship for the second straight year.  After battling against Falmouth High School the Mariners prevailed winning by a close margin 104 to 118.  MDI came in Third with a score of 189.

Skippers, Hugh Levitt and Simon Morin with crews, Emmett Acosta, Courtney King, Jesse Mann, Amelia McClellan, Emerson Brott dealt with blustery and shifty conditions Saturday and light spotty to medium breezes Sunday.

Sailors tactical and boat handling skills were challenged.  Finding a favorable position on the starting line, being on the correct side of the course, catching the shifts and the ability to maneuver the boats, all contributed to the teams succeeding.  Fourteen teams from Maine competed for the trophy.

Combined with the State Championships was the DownEast Invitational Regatta.  Nineteen schools from throughout New England came to compete.  Marblehead High School won the title with Taber Academy, second, Belmont Hills, third and Camden, fourth.

The Butch Minion Sportsmanship Award was given to Emily Lau from Islesboro High School by Betty Minion in honor of Betty’s brother Butch.  The championships were hosted by Maine Maritime Academy and George Stevens Academy.
