Hallowell, Maine - Crossroads Youth Center is honored to announce that they are the recipients of a $2500 grant from the Maine Community Foundation to develop a story time. The new program, Tale Time, will be held at Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell the second Saturday of each month for children ages 4 through 7. The events begin at 10:00 a.m.
Tale Time was developed and is facilitated by ten-year-old Abbey Gifford, a student at Hall-Dale Elementary School and a recent recipient of the Presidential Award for Volunteering. Her love of books and reading inspired her to want to share her passion for literacy and to give back to her community by volunteering. She hopes to inspire kids to get excited about the adventures reading can offer.
The story time includes Abbey reading a story, facilitating a craft, and a snack time. This grant allows for special guests, such as childrens’ authors, Chewonki and LC Bates presentations. In addition, the Hallowell Fire Department will hold a fire safety presentation with a tour of a fire truck for the children.
“We are so excited to receive this generous grant,” said Deb Landry, Executive Director of Crossroads. “This allows us to access the resources necessary to develop the project and our mission to invest in Maine youth, like Abbey. Her personal quest for community service and passion for reading is a model to inspire other youth to volunteer.”
