The “Sultans of String” Rule The Grand!

Ellsworth, Maine - The audience will be thrilled by the truly indescribable fun of the “Sultans of String” when the eclectic band performs at The Grand on Sunday, September 13th at 4 pm.

Tickets are now on sale at the Grand box office, by phone at 207-667-9500, and online at www.grandonline.org. The general admission seats are $15.00 to enjoy all the rhythms of world music in one sensational group.

2010 JUNO Award nominees –  and “Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity” –  the “Sultans of String” thrill their audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar while a funk bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while world rhythms excite audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance. The band is led by 6-string violinist Chris McKhool (“Jesse Cook,” “Pavlo”) who grew up in a Lebanese-Egyptian house bursting with music and diversity. Growing up, Chris was fed a steady diet of delicious musicality alongside Middle Eastern cuisine and violin lessons. At the core of the band’s sound is McKhool’s bold and fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (“Jesse Cook”) rumba rhythm – together their musical synergy created “Sultans of String’s” signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation are in-the-pocket bass master Drew Birston (“Chantal Kreviazuk”), and Cuban percussion master Rosendo Chendy Leon (“Alex Cuba”).

“There is something really magical about joining world music rhythms that we often play, but with pop sensibilities and forms and lengths, and blending that with the music of the East”, says McKhool, who goes on to say “Being invited back to play in Maine is a thrill—the audiences here are so warm and welcoming!”

So share the experience of enjoying the rhythms of world music as the “Sultans of String” performs at The Grand on Sunday, September 13th at 4 pm.
