University Credit Union Breaks Ground On New Headquarters

Orono, Maine - University Credit Union (UCU) celebrated the groundbreaking of its new headquarters and retail branch at the corner of Main Street (Route 2) and Bennoch Road in Orono, Maine, on Friday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m.

The 18,000-square-foot UCU building, designed and engineered by WBRC Architects ∙ Engineers, will house a UCU retail branch with drive-through services, 24/7 ATM service, business account services, administrative offices and technology center. Space will also be available for additional tenant use.

The UCU building will serve as a community landmark in Orono, a town that is home to University of Maine’s signature campus. A clock tower will be an aesthetic and functional centerpiece, and a public plaza will provide an inviting, outdoor space for tenants, customers and local residents.

The design blends harmoniously with local architecture, says project manager and architect Kris Kowal, of WBRC Architects ∙ Engineers.

“The redevelopment of this site carefully situates itself within Orono’s historic urban fabric while
simultaneously merging contemporary notions of color, form and smart energy-efficient design. The result is both sophisticated and engaging," Kowal says.

The 1.8-acre site redevelopment is a joint project of University Credit Union and Town of Orono, which provided parking and infrastructure. Seventy-six parking spaces will be created for UCU members and general town use. The development will greatly enhance Orono’s business district and serve as a focal point for the community, says WBRC’s Civic/Commercial Studio Director Robert Frank.
