Public Communication Course Offered At UMaine Hutchinson Center

Belfast, Maine - Do you want to develop confidence speaking in front of a group? Do you need to make
oral presentations for your job? Would you like to improve your writing and language skills for your career? The live class, Fundamentals of Public Communication (CMJ 103), will be offered on Mondays, 5:30–8 p.m. at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center beginning Sept. 9. This three-credit, semester-long course is open to the public as well as UMaine students.

The number one skill employers say they are looking for in employees is excellent communication. This course will help students develop their ability to communicate in both writing and speaking. Through class activities, practice, research, and readings, students will develop their critical thinking skills and learn to use evidence and reasoning to make a point. They will write and present informational, persuasive, and special occasion speeches on topics of their choice.

The course will be taught by Linda Buckmaster, who has been teaching communication in the University of Maine System for more than 17 years. A former magazine editor, Buckmaster has published poetry, fiction, and essay.   She currently works in an economic development nonprofit helping individuals build their careers and find jobs.
