Global perspective shed on Maine fisheries management
Penobscot East Resource Center will hold a seminar on Saturday, October 5 at its office in Stonington to compare its work with fishing communities to manage resources with experiences around the world. Professor Bob Pomeroy, a leading expert on small-scale fisheries at the University of Connecticut and Principal Scientist at the Fish Center in Penang, Malaysia will discuss his efforts to develop community co-management practices in over 70 countries of the world. Robin Alden, Director of Penobscot East Resource Center will share emerging co-management efforts in Maine fishing communities. Co-management is viewed as an increasingly important tool for securing a future for fisheries and fishing communities in the face of a changing climate.
The seminar will begin with a boat tour of fishing waters around Stonington aboard the Sunbeam.
The seminar is being jointly organized with the Camden Conference and is one of a series of events leading up to its February Conference on “The Global Politics of Food and Water” with funding from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation.
