The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty

The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty August 31 Camden Public Library

Richard Cornelia will present an illustrated lecture on “The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty” on Saturday, August 31, at 1:00 pm. The talk is part of the Windjammer Festival activities. “The mutiny on HMS Bounty in 1789 had all the ingredients for lasting fame: valor at sea, mutiny, survival against impossible odds, beautiful bronze-toned women, and free sex; all set against an exotic paradise,” says Cornelia. “Captain Bligh (he was really a lieutenant) was pictured as a cruel tyrant frequently flogging his crew. Fletcher Christian, the lead mutineer, was depicted as a romantic champion fighting for the crew’s rights.  But is this a true accounting?” he asks.  “Would it surprise you to know that the Tahitian women taken to Pitcairn Island were kidnapped by the mutineers? Were any of the mutineers captured and hanged? The answers are sure to surprise you!”
