Build a boat, cross a crate, parade your pride and joy, buy some maritime art and more
This coming Labor Day weekend’s Windjammer Festival in Camden is more than beautiful boats, fireworks, maritime heritage, expertly flipped pancakes and perfectly stirred chowder. For those looking to join in, Camden's Public Landing and harbor play host to a variety of activities to entertain and engage everyone.
On Saturday, August 31 teams are invited to enter the Build-a-Boat contest which begins at 9am. The contest engages teams to build the most sea-worthy vessel out of materials supplied by EBS and Sikaflex. Building will take place on the Public Landing and the boats race across the harbor at noon on Sunday. Entry forms and rules can be found on the website or on the landing Saturday.
All day Saturday, local artists will be painting the scene. Then at 4pm, their work will be available for sale at a rousing auction. Take home a memory of the festival and Camden.
On Sunday morning it is the little boats’ turn as radio controlled sailboats compete for the Chadwick cup. Entries encouraged.
On Sunday afternoon, boats of all shapes and sizes are invited to be part of the boat parade that gets under way at 4pm. Fill out a form for a parade number on the website, the Harbor Master's building or Wayfarer Marine any time before the parade. Then meet up at Green Can #7 near Curtis Island by 4pm Sunday and prepare to be feted as you slowly circuit the harbor!
Throughout the weekend there will be plenty of chances to join the fun or learn new things: from boat building to blacksmithing, from how to catch lobsters to what is found on the bottom of the ocean, from weather to boating safety.
