Portland Sea Dogs Playoff hopes alive

'Dogs rock the Thunder 8-1 Chris Hernandez tosses 7 scoreless, Linares 8th homer
Portland, Maine - The Sea Dogs entered Friday's series opener needing to win all five games in their series with Trenton. Portland (68-70) started off in the right direction, cruising by the Trenton Thunder (71-67) 8-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368 fans at Hadlock Field.

Lefty Chris Hernandez (2-0) hurled seven scoreless frames on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts to earn the win for Portland. Hernandez was perfect in five of seven innings, throwing 60 of 100 pitches for strikes.

The 'Dogs put the game away in the sixth inning with three runs off losing pitcher Mikey O'Brien (7-8), who yielded four runs on six hits over 6 innings pitched.

J.C. Linares' career week continued in the series opener, as the 28-year old Cuban native went 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer. Linares is hitting .542 (13-for-24 ) with 4 homers and 12 RBI this week. His blast over the Maine Monster in the sixth gave Portland a 3-0 lead.

Michael Almanzar and Travis Shaw smacked their 16th homers of the season. Almanzar finished 2-for-4, knocking in the game's first run with a two-out infield single in the fourth.

Christian Vazquez reached base three times, going 2-for-3, and tagging the Monster twice. His two-run single in the seventh gave Portland a 6-0 lead.Tony Thomas drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Noe Ramirez closed out the game with two innings of relief on two hits and one run. Jose Pirela knocked in Trenton's lone tally with a single.Hernandez escaped a first and third nobody out jam in the fourth. The quality start was the fourth in five starts since joining Portland on August 7.

Garin Cecchini went 1-for-3, extending his on-base streak to 39 games, the third best streak in team history.

Before Friday's game, the Sea Dogs inducted Kevin Youkilis into the Unum Sea Dogs Hall of Fame.

The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) continue their five-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. LHP Mickey Pena (1-0, 3.29) and Terry Doyle (1-5, 3.94) start for Portland. RHP Shane Greene (7-4, 3.48) and RHP Caleb Smith (Double-A debut) get the starting nods for Trenton.
