From The Studio of Alexandra Tyng

Upcoming Shows

THE UNSEEN ASPECT, my solo show of eight new figurative paintings and a few landscapes, will be opening Friday, September 6th, at the Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland, Maine.

For the last year and a half I've been working on a series of paintings that explore archetypes of human relationships and the journey through life. Using people I know well--family members and close friends--as models, or characters, I have distilled ideas down to their essence, creating imaginary scenes that appear "real," although they never actually happened  as they are painted. Each theme can be appreciated on many levels and the concept of time is used fluidly.  My intent is to suggest many possible interpretations so that the viewer becomes involved with what is happening and can generate a narrative that may possibly connect with mine. I'm still working on this series, but I'm excited to be able to show what I have completed so far.

The opening reception will be on September 6th, from 5 to 8 p.m. Please stop by if you are nearby! September 6th is First Friday in the Rockland-Thomsaton area, so you might even want to make a special trip for this fun-filled evening of art and celebration. The galleries in Rockland will all be open, plus Maine Impressions will be opening at the Haynes Gallery just down the road in Thomaston.

The exhibit will run through September 30th.

Check out this article in Fine Art Today, the online supplement to Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. Editor Allison Malafronte interviews me about the show and asks some questions that were challenging and fun to answer.

The September issue of American Art Collector will also contain a feature article on The Unseen Aspect written by John O'Hern, former curator of the Re-Representing Representation shows at the Arnot Art Museum.

I will also be participating in a group show called WOMEN PAINTING WOMEN: (R)EVOLUTION, opening on Friday, September 20th, at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. Some of you might remember the original blockbuster show at the Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2010. Principle hosted a show for 14 artists from the Charleston show last lear, and the response was so favorable that they invited us back this year. We each invited another figurative artist, and the gallery added four of their own artists for a grand total of 32!

This is one of the three paintings I will have in the show.
Show catalogs are available now. You can order them  online through MagCloud.

The mission of Women Painting Women is twofold: to see if and how female artists approach the subject of women differently than male artists do, and to increase the visibility of women figurative painters.  Several years ago, artists Sadie Jernigan ValeriAlia El Bermani, and Diane Feisselstarted a blog called Women Painting Women. The response to the blog was overwhelming. Not only did they receive hundreds of images from artists all over the world, but also they saw a groundswell of interest in these female figurative artists. It wasn't long before the blog attracted the attention of galleries, first RLS, then Principle, and now many more in the United States and abroad.

Among these galleries is The Haynes Galleries in Nashville, Tennessee, where WOMEN PAINTING WOMEN: A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN will open August 23rd and run till October 5th. The opening reception will be on Friday, August 23rd, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. I will have a couple of paintings in this show, too.

Part of the fun of the WPW outreach is that some of the same artists are in more than one show, along with many artists I have never met before. The circles keep getting wider and wider even as they intersect. It has been quite a journey for me getting to know these dynamic and talented artists, and seeing their work having increasing impact on the art world. I feel honored to be able to exhibit with them.
