Show Description in Brief:
In this twist on Aesop's classic fable Country Mouse and City Mouse, it's Country Mouse's turn to serve lunch to his city cousin - but what can he do when all the food keeps disappearing? It's a country style snack attack! Quick, call the mouse patrol to search for clues and track down the culprits! This is a gnawing mystery the whole family can enjoy.

About Tot Theatre: Inviting Young Audiences to Get in on the Action
Country Mouse and the Missing Lunch Mystery is the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine’s second foray into “Tot Theatre,” plays that make a special effort to appeal to very young audiences (toddlers and even babies) who are seeing theatre for the first time.

“So many children come to see their very first play here,” says Reba Short, Theatre Artistic Director. “Think of what an amazing opportunity that is! We get to show that theatre is fun, it’s a blast, and it’s for them. I want them to leave the show feeling like the theatre is part of their world now, that it’s something they love.”

To that end, the Museum & Theatre received funding from the Maine Community Foundation to create a show that works for children as young as eighteen months old, while still appealing to the preschool- and elementary-age kids who comprise the Museum & Theatre’s loyal audience. Collaborating with celebrated choreographer Lisa Hicks, Reba Short and her cast have developed a show full of movement, music and a fun, frothy little story about Aesop’s classic critters, Country Mouse and City Mouse.

Young audiences can be easily frightened – even by villains that we grown-ups think are silly – so Country Mouse has no bad guy, just a simple story about tracking down a missing lunch basket. Little ones also have a hard time staying quiet for an entire show, so this one offers them a few sing-along opportunities and a chance to help the characters solve the mystery. Even the lighting’s been adjusted (just a bit less dark than usual) to suit a younger crowd who get a little anxious in the dark.

This show also extends beyond the stage - families visiting the Museum & Theatre in the weeks surrounding the show should keep an eye out for Country Mouse, City Mouse and other friends making appearances throughout the Museum!
