Guys and Dolls, JR., produced by special permission of Music Theatre International, is a shorter version of the well-known show and is suitable for younger performers. Often described as the perfect musical comedy and one of Broadway’s most hilarious shows, Guys and Dolls, JR. depicts the unlikely romance between Sarah Brown — a pure-at-heart urban missionary — and Sky Masterson —a slick, high-rolling Broadway gambler who woos Sarah on a bet but ends up falling in love with her. There is also the comically turbulent relationship between Miss Adelaide — a nightclub performer with chronic flu brought on by being engaged to the same man for 14 years —and Nathan Detroit — Adelaide’s fiance who is more devoted to finding the next spot for his floating dice game than to ever getting married. A full cast of colorful characters makes this legendary show a lively fun event for the whole family.
Ashwood’s enthusiastic and capable 8th graders headline this middle school production. Some local professional talents are also lending a guiding hand. Musical direction is provided under the clear eye and keen ear of acclaimed performer Beverly Scott. Scott, owner of Free Your Talents — teaching people to get over self-consciousness and the fear of presenting in front of a crowd, is no stranger to the stage or to working with the wonderful students of Ashwood. “Producing a polished musical within a short span of time calls for attentiveness, receptivity, energy, focus, teamwork and trust,” says Scott. “Ashwood’s middle school students always rise to the occasion, reaching beyond the footlights to entertain their audiences with
dynamism and vigor. It’s a real treat to engage with these eager performers and see them progress.”
The show’s choreographer, Katie Thompson, is at home both on the stage and at Ashwood. Widely known as an instructor and dancer she is also an Ashwood alum. Returning to Ashwood to choreograph this musical is a special moment for Thompson and the students are inspired by her joy, skill and professionalism. The school also feels very fortunate to have period costuming and consultation from musical theater veteran and costumer, Sue Ghoreyeb.
