DECD Welcomes News of Northern Maine Being Named Top 10 US Travel Destination for 2013

Augusta, Maine - International travel publisher Lonely Planet has chosen Northern Maine for its annual list of the top U.S. places to visit in the New Year.

The list of "Top 10 U.S. Destinations for 2013" was announced today on CNN, and recognizes the Maine region from The Forks to Aroostook County for its whitewater rafting, hiking in Baxter State Park, trail biking, canoe trips, moose watching and scenic Moosehead Lake.

"Many people are familiar with the beauty of Maine's coast and beaches. This recognition will encourage visitors to extend their stay and explore the northern part of our great state after some time on our beautiful coastline," said Commissioner George
Gervais of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. "We want to encourage our visitors to take deeper excursions, stay longer and spend more."

Lonely Planet called Northern Maine "a wilderness adventure." The region was the only New England location chosen for the list, which is put together by Lonely Planet's United States editors and guidebook authors. Other destinations on the list include Philadelphia, San Juan Islands, Wash.; Louisville, Ky.; Verde Valley, Ariz.; and Glacier National Park in Montana.
