Augusta, Maine - Lithgow Public Library will host two music concerts during the month of November, ranging from jazz to acoustic singer-songwriters. The University of Maine at Augusta’s Jazz on Tour group will perform on Tuesday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m. The final Saturday morning “Live at the Library” concert featuring singer-songwriters Giff Jamison and Tim Rice will be held on Saturday, November 17 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Both concerts are free and open to the public and take place in the Reading Room.
UMA Jazz on Tour is a performing and touring ensemble from the Jazz and Contemporary Music program at UMA. The group performs in schools and communities around the state giving clinics and concerts. Their repertoire includes a mix of jazz standards, pop and rock arrangements, and recent jazz originals, and featuring composers such as Cole Porter, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, John Scofield and the Beatles.
The group includes Steve Perry, saxophone; Rurik Brackett, guitar; Darren Hicks, bass; Jesse Feinberg, piano; Steve Grover, director/drums; and guest singers Dorie Barnes, Brittany Yorks and Christine McCullough. UMA Jazz on Tour is directed by award-winning UMA faculty member Steve Grover.
For the November 17 “Live at the Library” concert, Harpswell resident Jamison will play an acoustic set that draws from his folk, blues, jazz and rock influences. “Vast empty prairies, slow rolling rivers, moon-filled dreams, expectant lovers and broken hearts: all find a place somewhere in my music,” he said.
Rice has traveled the world playing in bands and collaborating on songwriting and studio projects. He returned to his roots and now lives in coastal Maine where he focuses on writing songs and playing them for audiences of all sizes. His set will encompass a range of genres, including folk, R&B, soul and blues. One reviewer said. “Rice’s engaging and spontaneous style on stage, blended with his soulful vocals and guitar work, convey not only the message but the feeling, making each performance fresh and exciting.”
