Blue Hill, Maine - Blue Hill artist Gerald (Jerry) Cumbo will exhibit bird carvings in a show, Birds in Three Dimensions – realistic, decorative and shallow relief carvings, in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Howard Room Cases from Monday December 3rd to the end of February. The show will consist of bird carvings in several styles, including realistic detailed, decorative decoys and shallow relief.Jerry has been a woodworker for more than 35 years. He began his career as an apprentice with Thomas Stender, cabinet maker and designer in New York State and spent fourteen years in home restoration specializing in Victorian homes throughout western New York. He spent five years in Puerto Rico working on a William Hand motorsailer restoration project, and moved to Maine to devote his time to boat building and building his own home in Blue Hill. He worked as the shop manager for Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine for 11 years.
Following his retirement Jerry became interested in bird carving through a friend who is also a carver. He has been studying at the Wendell Gilley Museum in Southwest Harbor, Maine, and has shown his bird carvings in many local and international bird carving shows and galleries, winning numerous awards. In 2013 Jerry will be teaching a course in bird carving at Wooden Boat School and showing birds in several galleries in Maine.
The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Friday December 7th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. The show will be available for viewing during Library hours subject to the Howard Room meeting schedule.
