Tibetan Buddhist Master on “Compassion”

Tibetan Buddhist master Geshe Gehlek will give a talk at the Camden Public Library on “Awakening Compassion” on Sunday, November 27, at 2:00 pm. The free talk will be hosted by the Rockland Shambhala Meditation Center. Now more than ever, our world needs compassion. The public is invited to join in this special public talk and conversation with Geshe Gehlek. Gehlek will speak about the Buddhist path of liberation and will share experiences and insights on the innate suffering of humanity, as well as the Buddha’s teachings on compassion and freedom from suffering. Through his talk and the discussion to follow, Geshe Gehlek will engage the community in a timely dialogue about how compassion – understanding suffering and taking action to relieve it – can truly shift our world.

Geshe Gelek began his studies in 1987 at Drepung Monastery in India. He continued for seventeen years at the Institute for Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, India, and then completed his Geshe degree at Drepung Loseling Monastery. Geshe Gehlek then had the choice to continue to teach in India or the United States, or to return to his homeland in the eastern Tibetan region of western China. With the counsel of his teacher, he returned to China, where he currently resides and teaches at Drakgo Monastery. Geshe Gehlek has taught in Europe, the United States, and Beijing, where interest in Buddhist teachings is growing. Geshe Gelek, who has family living in Brunswick, is a warm and direct teacher in English.

The Rockland Shambhala Meditation Center is part of Maine Shambhala, a nonprofit organization affiliated with Shambhala International. There are more than 150 Shambhala Meditation Centers in the world. Shambhala Centers offer teachings on meditation, contemplative arts, compassion, and Shambhala Buddhism.
