Statement from Police Chief Regarding Sanctuary City

PORTLAND, Maine -- Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck released the following statement today regarding the fact that Portland is not a sanctuary city. While Chapter 2 of the Portland City Code does state that City employees are not to ask the immigration status of individuals who are seeking City services, unless ordered to do so by a court or law, the ordinance further states that law enforcement personnel are to cooperate with federal officials, which is contrary to what a sanctuary city would do.

Chief Sauschuck:
"The Portland Police Department cooperates with federal partners when our assistance is requested and we will continue to do so, but it is not our practice nor will it be our practice to stop people in Portland and ask their immigration status. The Police Department works incredibly hard to build trust and relationships in our community and citizens should definitely feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns they may have. Anyone who lives, works, or visits in Portland will see nothing new and as always they should feel safe and protected by the police department."
