Winter Vacation Youth Theater Workshops at The Grand!

Ellsworth, Maine - The Grand has brought together theater professionals Rebecca Edmondson, Robin Jones, Nina Robinson-Poole, Carol Korty, and Andrew Simon and Brittany Parker to teach a week-long series of workshops on the world of theater for all youth ages 9-14 interested in the stage. Workshops happen every day from 9 am til noon, during winter vacation, Monday, February 15, through Friday, February 19, 2016. Cost per child is $30 per day or $125 for the entire week. Space is limited and registration closes on Friday, February 12.

Do you have a child who has always wanted to be an actor, write and perform comedy skits or dance onstage? This is a perfect opportunity; for one whole week, your child can learn about acting, dancing, or even onstage fighting. Here's the lineup for the February Vacation Theater Workshops:

Folk Singing, Dancing and Playing - Monday, Feb 15th: Instructor Rebecca Edmondson teaches students to experience the cultural aspect of folk music, song, and dance, as well as explore folk genres and the meanings of dances, songs, and music games. Get ready for some toe-tapping, folk-frolicking fun!

So You Wanna Act? - Tuesday, Feb. 16th: Instructor Robin Jones gives students the basics on
learning to read a script, create characters, and talk in funny voices, as they explore different types of stories and characters.

Movement for the Stage - Wednesday, Feb. 17th: In this workshop students will learn from choreographer Nina Robinson-Poole how to move on stage through both choreographed dance and basic movement. They will gain an understanding of how a stage works, and the ability to move on stage in a way that enhances their performance.

Making Up Skits!  - Thursday, Feb. 18th: How crazy can you get?  We’ll see. Working in twos, threes and with the whole group, instructor Carol Korty will help you try out several ways to create short scenes. Then you’ll pick a few favorites, team up, and develop those trial scenes into skits to present to each other. You might even think of other places you could present them outside of this class.

Shakespeare and Stage Combat! - Friday, Feb. 19th This theater workshop explores Shakespeare’s verse and characters by focusing on the body and breath. Andrew Simon and Brittany Parker of the “Barn Arts Collective” will work with participants to investigate the rhythm and language of selected fight scenes from Romeo and Juliet, linking the connection between the text and the body in performance. Workshop participants will learn techniques for breath support, rhythm and stress, as well as safe stage combat maneuvers.
