GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Talia D'Ambruoso (Warwick,
R.I.) scored the only goal of the match with 15 seconds remaining in the
first sudden-death overtime period to give the visiting University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs a 1-0 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference match Saturday
afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the second straight for the Corsairs, and
improved their record to 5-4-1 overall (2-1-1 in LEC play). The Huskies
fell to 3-8-0 overall (0-4-0 in LEC) after suffering their second
overtime lost in conference play.
With the Corsairs applying some pressure late in the
first 10-minute extra session,
D'Ambruoso collected a loose ball outside
the box on the left side and hit a 25-yard strike that found its way
into the far side of the net. The unassisted marker was D'Ambruoso's
fifth of the season.
UMD had an edge in possession and shots (9-3), but did
not have any real dangerous chances in a scoreless first half. USM
senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) handled all the shots with ease.
Southern Maine had its best scoring opportunity midway
into the second half. The Huskies worked the ball into a dangerous
position in the box, but were unable to convert the chance into a shot
on UMD sophomore goalie Madison Boucher (Southampton,
Mass./Hampshire Regional). At the defensive end, Temple was making four
saves to keep the match scoreless. Temple made a big play on a ball
that came into the box, beating a UMD forward to the ball with a sliding
stop.
The Corsairs finished the match with a 23-3 edge in total
shots (8-1 on goal) and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Boucher had
one save to pick up her fourth shutout of the season. Temple made seven
saves.
Southern Maine will be back in action on Tuesday (3:30
p.m.) hosting the University of New England for a non-conference match.
UMass Dartmouth will play at Roger Williams University on Wednesday
(4:00 p.m.).
