LEWISTON, Maine -- With freezing temperatures at Russell Street Field
and high winds, the Bates women's soccer team played the 19th ranked
Amherst Lord Jeffs to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats (5-5-3, 2-3-3) consistently put pressure on Amherst (8-2-2, 4-2-2) keeper Holly
Burwick. Burwick tallied 10 saves in the match, including a crucial one
in the final minute of the second overtime. Captain Leah Humes got behind the Amherst defense but Burick came out of the box to made a sliding stop just when Humes fired a shot.
Bates keeper Sarah McCarthy finished with seven saves of her own.
Offensively the Lord Jeffs out-shot Bates 21-17. Humes led the way for
the Bobcats; finishing with four shots on goal. Olivia Amdur finished with three shots while Karen Lockhart tallied two.
Amherst's Maeve McNamara led all players with five shots while Megan Kim finished with four.
The wind impacted both teams' offenses. Amherst played against the
wind in the first period while Bates battled the elements in the second
period.
The draw snaps a four-match losing streak for the Bobcats against the Lord Jeffs.
The women's soccer program has some time off before they welcome Middlebury to town on Saturday. The match starts at 11:00 a.m.
