Portland, Maine - Join Portland Public Library for a seminar on the “Roots of Anti-Semitism” this fall on Wednesdays in September from 5:30-7:30pm in Meeting Room #5. This free seminar, taught by Alicia Harding, will cover the time period from the beginnings of Christianity to 1492 when the Jews were expelled from Spain. We will cover interpretations of the writings of the early Christian theologians, the changing status of Jews in Medieval Europe, depictions of Jews in Medieval Christian art, accusations of ritual murder and blood libel and finally their expulsion. The seminar will be lecture/discussion format and handouts of the reading material will be distributed in class. The reading for the first session is available for pick-up in the library.
Alicia Harding received her degrees from California State University at Fullerton. Her recent study of the anti-Semitism includes a workshop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, participation in a National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar in Oxford England, course work in biblical history. Currently
She teaches History at SMCC.
