Downtown Advocacy Group Recognizes 10 Year Old Mason Curtis

When a young person demonstrates the kind of initiative shown by Mason Curtis of Rockland, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Just over a week ago, Mason was discovered on Main Street doing something unusual. The 10-year-old was seen hauling a small wagon with a sign on it suggesting that he was taking it upon himself to clean up the streets of his hometown.

It seems that Mason and an occasional friend would walk through the downtown district with rubber gloves and a hand-held grabbing device to pick up litter. Although Rockland has made great strides in its ongoing revitalization, Mason noticed that some people are not as sensitive to how they dispose their personal trash and cigarette butts.

After one of the region’s news outlets published a story about Mason’t efforts, the executive director of Rockland Main Street, Inc., Gordon Page, made contact with Mason’s family and offered to present Mason with a certificate of appreciation, at which time he and Mason’s mom put the wheels in motion to surprise the youngster with a brief event that took place at the administrative offices of the downtown advocacy organization.

On July 31, accompanied by his parents, grandparents, and younger brother, Mason was surprised with a certificate of appreciation, a gift certificate to Planet Toys, an official Rockland Main Street, Inc., volunteer badge, and a Healthy Maine Streets tote bag. The family also received a gift card to Terra Optima Farm Market.

Rockland Main Street, Inc., is a focused partnership of residents, businesses and local government that enhances and protects the unique sense of place and economic vitality of downtown Rockland, Maine.
