City to update community on progress made for management plan
What: The City of Portland will host a meeting updating the public on the development of the Capisic Pond management plan. Attendees will receive an update on the design progress for open water habitat enhancement at the pond and water quality improvements associated with the Rockland Avenue stormwater outfall.
Capisic Pond dates back to the late 1600’s as a manmade impoundment of the brook and was the site of an early gristmill. The pond’s current dam was constructed in the 1950’s with some modifications completed in the 1990’s to manage upstream flooding. The adjacent Capisic Pond Park was established in 1948 and is a popular spot for residents and bird watchers. For the past fifteen years, the city has made significant efforts to improve the Capisic Brook watershed through sewer separation and stormwater management projects designed to eliminate combined sewer overflow discharges. Further water quality improvement efforts were also recommended in the Capisic Brook Watershed Management Plan completed in 2012. The development of a sustainable management plan for Capisic Pond is intended to help the community fully realize the benefits of this valued natural resource.
