OWLS HEAD AIRCRAFT TO SOAR OVER PENOBSCOT BAY RENDEZVOUS FLEET

ROCKLAND, Maine - The sight of scores of racing sailboats jockeying for position on the first day of a regatta is thrilling enough. Low level flying by stunningly beautiful vintage aircraft sets hearts racing wherever it takes place. From 11:30am to noon on Friday August 16 the two experiences will come together for one unforgettable show as the classic biplanes of the Owls Head Transportation Museum and the racing fleet of the Penobscot Rendezvous converge on Rockland harbor.

Founded in 2011 and now in its third year, the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is presented by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, and is intended to highlight the beauty of the bay and the excellence of Maine’s boat building and service industries to both local and visiting sailors and boaters. The event features three days of sailboat racing and power boat events, a fantastic mix of sail and power boats, great opportunities to learn about the cutting edge of the marine industry and marine arts in Maine, and three nights of fabulous parties for participants and guests.

The Owls Head Transportation Museum aircraft are participating to both welcome the fleet and herald the start of one of the museum’s biggest weekends of the year, the 36th Annual New England Auto Auction. Bidders and spectators from around the world are expected to attend “one of the great summer events in New England” on August 17. The 36th Annual New England Auto Auction will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. A preview week will take place August 12 through 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, providing potential bidders with an opportunity to view the large selection of vehicles slated for sale.  Bidder preview and registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the day of the auction and will extend through the end of the sale.

The public is encouraged to watch the show from the Rockland Breakwater, where they will be able to enjoy unsurpassed views. After the ½ hour airshow, the public should stick around to watch some great sailboat racing as the start the first day of racing will get underway immediately following the last flyover.
