Portland, Maine - The Sea Dogs used a 4-run fourth inning and their pitchers fanned 17, defeating the Trenton Thunder, 7-4 on Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of a paid attendance of 2,337.
Right-hander Brandon Workman (1-0) was perfect in four of five innings to notch the win for Portland. Trenton scored all four runs in the second inning off the right on Jose Pirela's two-run triple and Neil Medchil's two-run homer, to take a 4-2 lead. Workman finished with nine strikeouts - one shy of his career-high last July for High-A Salem.
Righty Chris Martin tossed three scoreless innings on two hits and seven strikeouts to earn the hold. Brock Huntzinger fired a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.
One night after Portland committed five errors, the Thunder's six errors led to seven unearned runs from starter Zach Nuding(0-1). The Sea Dogs erased a 4-3 deficit by scoring four times in the fourth inning, sending nine to the plate. Peter Hissey andTony Thomas had RBI singles - SS Stephen Drew (1-for-3, RBI) added a sac-fly. Drew left the game after the sixth inning.
Portland scored two runs in the first inning on a sac-fly by Thomas and a run-scoring singe from Michael Almanzar (2-for-4, RBI).
The 17 strikeouts by Portland pitchers were the most since fanning 17 on July 11, 2011 at New Hampshire.
The Sea Dogs and Thunder continue their four-game series on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 PM first pitch from Hadlock Field.
