Augusta, Maine - The northbound on-ramp of I-95 Exit 113 in Augusta will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, April 22. Drivers wishing to enter I-95 northbound lanes from Route 3 and north Augusta will be guided to a detour on Route 104 to the northbound on-ramp at Exit 120 in Sidney.
The detour will remain in effect for approximately 30 days, weather permitting, while work crews reconstruct the Exit 113 northbound on-ramp. MaineDOT is placing numerous signs in the area and along the detour route, and is asking drivers to please plan ahead and allow extra time for their travel.
The closure of the northbound on-ramp at Exit 113 is part of the comprehensive improvement of the interchange and nearby roadways and intersections. The project has been designed to minimize congestion at Exit 112 and improve traffic flow, convenience and safety between Route 3, the Old Belgrade Road, Route 27 and I-95 where the new Alfond Center for Health is being built.
Two new roundabouts and two new signalized intersections are also being constructed. Old Belgrade Road will be widened to four lanes between a new roundabout on the west side of I-95 Exit 113 and the new medical center. Funding for the $13 million project includes a mix of federal, state, city and private funds from the medical center. Exit 113 Project Manager Shawn Smith of MaineDOT stated, "We're pleased to be working with a great team of contractors and to accomplish all of these improvements, and to do it all in the timeline that the Department requested in order to minimize impacts on drivers" Smith stated that the project is expected to be completed in November, when the Alfond Center for Health opens.
