The community is invited to be involved in this exciting event. Volunteers will assist with digging holes, amending soil, installing trees, and mulching trees. Homemade bagels and spreads will be available for volunteers, prepared by the students chefs in the Oceanside East High School Foundations Program. These students, under the supervision of teacher Jesse Bartke, have spent the year earning English, Science, and general credit learning to garden, cook, row, and perform other healthy living skills.
Community partners have been vital to this effort, and several groups have united to cultivate food systems education in RSU 13: Youthlinks, Good Tern Natural Foods, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Knox-Lincoln, and Lovering & Associates.
Youthlinks, a program of Broadreach, hosts the school garden and Youthlinks
AmeriCorps VISTA/Great Strides Volunteers conduct youth development and food education programs. Good Tern Natural Foods is a valuable partner, and lends support through Teisha Jones, the Membership, Education & Outreach Manager, and Dee Obuchon, Produce Manager. Lovering & Associates consults with the group on how these initiatives will drive community and economic development.

Station Maine will be harvesting seaweed with students and donating it to mulch the trees. Station Maine is an organization of community members dedicated to offering boating opportunities at no cost to youth of all ages in the mid-coast Maine area, and we are excited that they will contribute nutrient-dense mulch for our trees!
