WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine), yesterday held a video conference with students and faculty from Caribou High School in Caribou, Maine, as part of his ongoing “Capitol Class with Angus” series. Throughout the course of his time in Washington, Senator King hopes to connect with as many Maine high schools as possible in order to share with students his experiences as Maine’s junior U.S. Senator and to answer their questions about major issues facing the country. Today’s30 minute class covered a wide array of topics, including his first speech on the Senate floor, the importance of positive politics, and the value of active citizenship.
“I was delighted to speak with the students and teachers up at Caribou High School. Their level of engagement and genuine interest was truly impressive,” said Senator King following the session. “It’s important to find new and creative ways to engage our students, and I think advances in digital technology – like video conferencing – offer an incredible opportunity to connect our students to the vast world outside of the classroom.”
Caribou High School Principal Mark Jones added,“Having a chance to Skype with Senator King was an exciting opportunity for our students, and helped them to validate and make connections with what they have been learning in the classroom to real world applications. We greatly appreciate Senator King taking the time to enrich our students’ educational experience.”
Caribou High School, which is part of Regional School Unit 39, serves approximately 510 students from Caribou, Stockholm, Limestone, New Sweden, Woodland, Westmanland, and Connor. “Capitol Class with Angus” is part of Senator King’s larger effort to broaden constituent outreach through the use of 21st century technologies. He also employs video conferencing to meet with constituents and organizations based in Maine and records weekly videos that recap events in Washington.
