January Art: Transitions

Blue Hill, Maine - Brooklin artist Katherine Greene will exhibit her artwork at the Blue Hill Public Library during the month of January.  Greene’s first solo show and her first exhibition in Blue Hill, Transitions is an extensive body of work that includes drawings, paintings, and prints.  In discussing her approach to the variety in this work, Greene notes, “drawing is the beginning of everything and color is my muse. The interaction of the two leads to a letting go, a spontaneity, an abstraction.”   The artist has a strong, visceral connection to color and a distinct aptitude for capturing detail and light.  The exhibit ranges from
intricate line, pattern, and design to organic movement, light, and texture.

With regard to her inspiration, Greene attributes much to her environment and the lessons it has taught her.  “Living in Maine amidst such phenomena as sea smoke, damp spruce forests and the ever changing light on the ocean, experiencing the seasons with changing light and color, understanding how shape reveals itself through fog –I am inspired daily by what I see.”   Greene, a devoted teacher, also cites the important role her students have played in her work, “I am always inspired by my students and their sincere efforts and their intuitive nature to create.  My students have taught me to see broadly and to respect multiple points of view.”

Greene is the art teacher at George Stevens Academy and has been involved in education for the past 38 years.  In 2007, she was the recipient of a Maine Educators Fellowship, and in 2010, she nominated the Blue Hill peninsula as an “Imagination Intensive Community”, which won the area recognition of its promotion of the arts with young people.  Greene is also the founder of the renowned GSA Arts Festival.  A champion of the arts in education, she underscores the value and the significance of the many forms of artistic expression, stating, “through art we each make meaning of our lives and experiences. It is a celebration of that which makes us each unique.”

The public is invited to an opening reception for the show on Friday, January 11th at the Library from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  For more information, call the Library at 374-5515, or visit the artist’s web site at www.katherinegreenarts.com, or her etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/JournalBound.
