Video Special: The Great Schooner Race of 2017

Islesboro, Maine-On Friday America's largest fleet of commercial sailing vessels gathered in Islesboro for the 41 Great Schooner Race.  Many of these vessels are over 100 years old and four were built in the 1800s!   Originally built for fishing or the haul cargo now these historic vessels carry passengers and still earning a living for their owners.

The race starts just south of Islesboro and winds its way across Penobscot Bay to Rockland, ending at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.  One of the unique features, other than the age of the vessels, is that the passengers are encouraged to take part in raising sails and other crew functions to truly be a part of the race.
