Polar Bears Mute Mules in Senior Day Showdown

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Kimmy Ganong tallied her first career hat trick in a 5-1 Bowdoin field hockey win over Colby College on a Sunday afternoon at Ryan Field.

The second-ranked Polar Bears continue their successful 2015 campaign with a 12-0 (8-0 NESCAC) record. The Mules, coming off an upset victory over Amherst on Saturday, are 7-6 with a 2-6 mark in conference play.

How It Happened
  • Bowdoin's first tally of the day came off a Ganong to Rachel Kennedy finish across the goal face. With the ball and goalie on the left post, Ganong flipped a pass across to Kennedy who stood with an open look at the center of the cage to put Bowdoin up 1-0 18:29 into the game.
  • Kennedy tallied her second of the day two minutes later to double the Polar Bears lead. Following a turnover in Colby's defensive end, the ball was fed to Liz Znamierowski on the stroke line who found Kennedy on the left post for the goal.
  • Nicole Barbieri set up Ganong for Bowdoin's third of the game with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Following a broken corner for the Polar Bears, Barbieri collected the ball on the end line and passed beyond the reach of Sarah Evans to the far left side for a Ganong redirect.
  • Colby responded less than 30 seconds later with the Mules' first goal of the game off an unassisted effort from Becca Moore. Intercepting a Bowdoin pass in the backfield, Moore charged down the right side behind the defense and forced Bowdoin goalie Clara Belitz to come out and challenge. Moore maneuvered the ball around the prone Belitz and got Colby on the board.
  • Ganong tallied her second of the game 37 seconds later, streaking down the field off the restart from Colby's goal. Ganong carried the ball into Mules territory and made a move to draw the goalie before depositing Bowdoin's fourth of the game.
  • Bowdoin scored with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half to round out the day's offense. Ganong finished off a low cross pass from Znamierowski to finish the day.
  • Evans ended the day with eight saves, while Belitz made one stop for Bowdoin.
  • The Polar Bears outshot Colby by a 22-2 mark with a 10-2 edge in corners.
