Portland, Maine - Sailing Ships Portland, a new Maine nonprofit dedicated to sending youth to sea on tall ships, is holding its inaugural event Thursday night at 6:00 pm in Portland.
"Sailing Ships Portland’s mission is to put girls and boys on ships for the life-changing experience of being part of a ship’s crew. We believe sailing overnight and out of sight of land changes lives by providing new perspectives faster than other forms of experiential education," said Alex Agnew, President of Sailing Ships Portland.
Sailing Ships Portland is the local sponsor of Iberdrola Tall Ships Portland 2015.
The event on Thursday night will feature cocktails and food from Aurora Provisioners, and will feature at least 10 beautiful works of art, which will be shown at various locations this summer and are available for sale to benefit Sailing Ships Portland.
The goal of Sailing Ships Portland is to send up to 50 students to sea per year on sail training ships like those coming to Portland this week. The organization also plans to operate regular Tall Ships festivals in Portland. Already 17 boys and girls are at sea thanks to the work of Sailing Ships Portland. Images of them will be on display on Thursday night.
The event on Thursday is from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Creative Office Pavilion, 141 Middle St., Portland. Tickets are $75/person tickets and available at the door.
